Why I Became a Therapist – From Research to Reverence

Deep in the forests of Sweden or Canada—where silence speaks and thoughts can wander freely—is where I’ve always felt most at home. It’s in nature’s rhythm, in the conversations that stir or soothe, and in the search for meaning that I find my truest joy.

My name is Lena, and I’m a therapeutic counsellor with roots in both Sweden and Canada. Today, I primarily work with Swedes—in Sweden and across the globe—who are navigating a range of challenges, from life transitions and stress to relationship struggles and identity questions, as well as a desire to live more in line with their values. What many of my clients have in common is a sense that something is off—like the world is spinning too fast, feels fragmented, or just feels strange. I help them find clarity and direction in that confusion.

My own path to this work was far from linear.

I started my professional journey as a researcher, earning a PhD in Clinical Nutrition. I loved the curiosity and precision of science—and still do—but something was missing. I longed for human connection. For deeper conversations. For something that couldn’t be measured in a lab. Life took me from research labs to running a surgical clinic in Vancouver and finally into the therapy room—where I truly feel at home.

I’ve since trained as a therapist with a focus on ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), as well as transpersonal counselling, which invites spirituality, consciousness, and transformation into the therapeutic process. For me, it’s essential to combine an analytical lens with deep empathy. I believe in our capacity to grow, to change, and to discover new ways of being—no matter how chaotic the circumstances may be.

When I’m not working, you’ll most likely find me in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes, out hiking a forest trail, or in the gym, lifting weights while wondering whether it’s finally time to get a dog. I grow my own vegetables—not just because they taste better but because I believe in the deep connection between food, health, and sustainability. A lifelong nerd and bookworm, I can get happily lost in anything from psychology and neuroscience to philosophy and social theory.

But above all, I’m an optimist. I believe in curiosity. In our ability to find home—not just in houses, but in ourselves and in each other. I believe that conversations can change lives.

This blog is a continuation of those conversations. Here, I’ll be writing about ACT, psychology, life, and everything in between—with an open heart and the occasional touch of humour.

Do any of these words resonate with you? If so, I hope you’ll join me on this journey. Let’s explore, learn, and grow together. Feel free to email me at info@mindthemind.se or book a short introductory call through my booking page so we can get to know each other.
